Schrijfreizigers
The next step towards efficient writing !
Despite increasing digitalisation, both in the classroom and at home, it remains important that children learn to write properly.
Writing continues to be an essential school skil, allowing children to fully participate in daily learning and life. Moreover, writing not only influences fine motor development but also activates areas of the brain typing does not stimulate. This has a positive impact on memory and learning.
Yet, we see that 30 to 40 percent of children experience writing difficulties during their school years. Their handwriting may be hard to read, they may write too slowly, or they may experience cramping and pain during longer writing tasks.
In the first grade, there's an additional challenge: children transition to systematic writing. This means a lot of attention must be given to letter formation, proper connection between letters, writing size, and especially readability. Without adequate support, these challenges can develop into persistent writing problems that are much harder to correct later on.
That's why we're starting "Schrijfreizigers", a group lesson for first-grade children. In these lessons, we'll practice playfully on:
- handwriting readiness and fine motor skills
- efficient sitting position
- letter formation and automation of typefaces
- flowing connections between the letters
- an appropriate writing size
- clear and legible handwriting.
We want to teach children the right writing habits from the very beginning, so that writing does not become a stumbling block but a valuable skill that they can build on for the rest of their school career.
Why should I enroll my child in "Schrijfreizigers"?
Under the supervision of experienced physiotherapists, work is done in groups on writing motor skills
- Working in groups is motivating . Children can have fun together and learn from each other.
- Working in groups provides better transfer of what has been learned than one-on-one, because the context is similar to a classroom situation.
- Group lessons begin with a comprehensive observation of writing motor skills, from which individual goals are established. In other words, we identify the biggest obstacles for each child.
- Each lesson is based on an objective, but with differentiation based on each child's developmental level.
- Each lesson is playful and themed, and is built around our previously shared "car pencil grip," a trick to help children remember what an efficient pencil grip is.
- Intrinsic motivation is developed by giving children a say in objectives and activities.
- There is close cooperation between therapists, parents and teachers .
